Bobby Horton was elected mayor of West Columbia Tuesday, defeating incumbent Joe Owens.
Horton received 1,097 votes to Owens’ 555 votes.
“I’m humbled and appreciative for the support of the citizens,” Horton said. “I look forward to working with city council and the great employees of the City of West Columbia. I want us to be the best we can be.”
In West Columbia City Council races, the winners were: Trevor Bedell in District 2; Tem Miles in District 4; Jimmy Brooks in District 6; and Teddy Wingard in District 8.
In the mayor’s race, Challenger Madison Duncan finished third with 255 votes and Archie Ard received 70 votes.
Horton returns to the position of West Columbia mayor after a four-year absence. Owens defeated Horton in 2011.
Owens term devolved into a confrontation with West Columbia City Council that resulted in Owens being removed as the leader of council meetings in the spring of 2014.
Horton campaigned on the pledge to restore leadership to the city’s government. Horton served as West Columbia mayor from 2003 until 2011
